Workout Shoes - Shoes for Strength Training

I've always worked out in just a plain pair of tennis shoes. Rarely to I see or even think that using special shoes would make any difference at all. However, I began to think of better shoe support when I started doing heavy squats. This prompted me to do a little research in specific type shoes for working out that would give me better ankle support and put my feet in a more level position for squats and leg presses.

After some Googling around, I came across the Otomix brand of shoes. There's virtually nothing on the net about workout shoes. There's even less in bodybuilding forums about the subject. Yet soccer players have special shoes, and so do most other athletes. Tennis shoes are great for running but they didn't seem to be wonderful when it came to squatting and doing other heavy leg exercises.

These shoes ( a few versions are available) sell for around $95 on average depending on the website you find, and the sales being offered. With some clever searching, you can find a great price. I ordered my Otomix Ultimate Trainers online and was pleased to see many e-mail and tracking notifications about my order. According to Otomix, these workout shoes were specifically for:

Ultimate Trainer has been designed specifically for weight training and incorporates the new High Performance Bodybuilding system. The HPB system provides a combination of comfort and support utilizing a special wrap around strap adjusted by our innovative lacing system. This shoe is a must for the serious bodybuilder.

Note: Their shoes run a half size small compared to your true shoe size. They suggest that you order a half size larger.

Quickly I opened the box and found everything intact and in brand new condition. I was ready for my leg workout.

Adjusting the laces properly is a must. It came from the factory like most shoes. It wasn't laced thru each of the holes. I fixed the laces and found the shoes to fit nicely and very snug. I felt ankle support and was able to tighten them like a snowboarding boot but not so tight as to be uncomfortable. I headed off to the squat rack.

Doing squats is something I enjoy. Honestly, I enjoy them a bit more now with full support for my feet. These shoes were great first time. NO break in period was necessary. They were comfortable, gave strong ankle support and allowed me to do full squats without any annoying feet issues. I felt like my feet were flat and firmly place on the floor with good traction. Moving onto the leg press, same thing. NO odd arches, no slippage, and good solid firm foot placement for a good pressing motion.

I only use these shoes on leg days. That is really where I want the support. I do not wear them outside for walking around. They are just like gym gloves. Used in that environment as appropriate. The soles of the shoe are good for traction in a smooth, flat gym environment. These particular shoes are not made to be worn as a street shoe. That would be a big mistake. You'd wear out the tread in days and be out $100 very fast. However, in the gym, where they are meant to be, these shoes were incredibly superior.

My overall reaction and opinion of my Otomix workout shoes are very favourable. I would recommend them to anybody looking for some comfortable, high quality, long lasting footwear that is designed specifically for the gym.

Boxing De Stress

When you are not feeling well and the Doctor says "it is stress related," take a step back and look at your lifestyle. Is there physical activity in your routine or have you become sedentary? The truth is that stress will play a role in many diseases and overall quality of life. Getting off the couch or pushing yourself away from the computer to exercise can seem tedious and uninspiring at times. Enter boxing.

Boxing can be an extremely effective remedy for sedentary people looking get into shape, or fit people looking to change up their workout routine. If you have ever heard any expert on health and fitness talk about the boxing, you will hear high praise for what an incredible total body workout it is. The benefits of boxing as a complete body exercise are difficult to equal, and few exercises provide the fun and excitement that boxing can.

In addition, boxing can be a powerful tool to fight stress for several reasons:

1. Outlet for frustration. As life becomes annoying, turning to a high-energy exercise such as boxing provides an effective release of negative emotions and turns the unhealthy emotions into motivation for increased health and well-being.

2. Increase 'feel good' hormones. Boxing decreases 'stress hormones' and increases endorphins, giving your mood a natural 'feel good' boost.

3. Distraction. Boxing provides an opportunity to think about something else besides what is 'stressing you out'. As you feel yourself unwinding your thoughts could lead you to a resolution of the stressful situation or encourage you to 'smell the roses' and relax.

4. Look good, feel good. A personal benefit of boxing is that it helps you lose weight, tone your body, and maintain a healthy look. Now, when you put on that new outfit, you will see results and project an increase in confidence and strength.

5. Social support. Boxing usually includes being around others. Having others to exercise with at the gym, interacting with a personal trainer and fellow boxers, provides a double dose of stress-relief with the combination of exercise and fun with others.

6. Stress and illness. Stress can cause illness, illness can cause stress By improving your overall health with exercise and activity, boxing will save a great deal of stress by strengthening your immunity to colds, the flu and other minor illnesses and helping you stay healthier longer. You will enjoy life more because of it.

7. Gain self-confidence. Your new-found strength, agility, and power will make you feel great. You'll earn how to use your body every minute of the day, not just during your workout, and develop your body and mind through boxing.

Given all these benefits, why aren't more people boxing? Well, have you ever been to a boxing gym? At the risk of over-generalizing, boxing clubs can be intimidating, poorly equipped, dingy places you would not want to workout in. Most people who want to try boxing are looking for an upbeat, safe atmosphere, and not to hit someone else. There are many times more homemakers, accountants and doctors than there are professional boxers. At Innovative Fitness, we achieve a balance by taking the best training practices of boxers, who are clearly some of the best conditioned athletes in the world, and creating a fun, stress relieving fitness program that is both save and enjoyable for everyday people. We encourage people of all demographics to give boxing a try. So head to Innovative Fitness, strap on the gloves, and get ready for a new, faced-paced challenge with one of our boxing-knowledgeable trainers. You'll feel and love the difference.

How Much Water Should You Drink?

Did You Hear About This?

A Sacramento, CA radio station held a contest called "No Wee for a Wii." It was a water drinking contest to see how much the contestants could drink without going to the bathroom. Ultimately the 2nd place winner (Jennifer Strange) paid with her life! Yes, you can actually die from drinking too much water.

As early as 1601, Tycho Brahe (an early astronomer) was though to have died from straining his bladder. It had been said that to leave the banquet before it concluded would be the height of bad manners, and so he remained, and that his bladder, stretched to its limit, developed an infection which he later died of. Later evidence suggested this might not be the case.

There are several other notorious cases in which infants, runners and a fraternity hazing lead to deaths from water intoxication.

While this is another sad story, it's clear that for many years, Americans have been told by the media and doctors that we are dehydrated. We need to drink more water!

Many times such things lead to scare tactic websites and total confusion. Which is why I think the following chart may help you to SAFELY determine how much water you need to stay properly hydrated for your activity without over consumption.

* this chart is meant to be a guide not an absolute *

This chart is courtesy of the ISSA http://www.issaonline.com

Recommended Water Intake:

Step 1 Select an appropriate need factor.

Need Factors

0.5 -- Sedentary no sports or training

0.6 -- Jogger or light fitness training

0.7 -- Sports participation or moderate training 3 times a week

0.8 -- Moderate daily weight training or aerobic training

0.9 -- Heavy weight training daily

1.0 -- Heavy weight training daily plus sports training or "2-a-day" training

Step 2 Multiply weight (in pounds) by the appropriate need factor to arrive at the recommended water intake in ounces per day.

Example 1 120 pounds x 0.6 = 72 ounces per day

Example 2 200 pounds x 0.7 =140 ounces per day

We recommend that you drink water eight to twelve times per day.

Example 1 72 ounces per day divided by 10 glasses = 7.2 ounces per glass

Example 2 140 ounces per day divided by 12 glasses = 11.7 ounces per glass

My prayers go out to the family and the 3 children Jennifer left behind. It was a sad story. Hopefully, thru word of mouth and this chart, it might be prevented in the future.

HIIT - What it is and How to Use It

HIIT stands for High Intensity Interval Training, and is one of the best ways to retain muscle while losing fat. It's by no means a new technique however. If you consider this method in the truest sense of its name, it all comes down to a form of interval training.

HIIT training is the best way to burn fat without compromising your muscle tissue. There have been studies which show that some activities requiring long endurance, such as aerobics for example, can cause the breakdown of muscle tissue. This isn't a good thing. HIIT training allows your body to metabolize the fat while keeping your muscles intact.

There are many aspects of HIIT and interval training that are quite similar. The main difference is the intensity of the activity. You're probably now asking yourself what interval training is. Don't worry, everything will be much clearer by the time we're done here today.

Interval training uses different levels of intensity during the same workout. You would add a considerably higher intensity activity to your low intensity workout session. This can be achieved in many ways, allowing you to change things around if you find things getting boring, or just want to do something different.

As with any exercise, if you're new to it you have to be sure to clear it with your physician first. You don't want to be following any exercise program he or she doesn't agree will help you.

I'm going to give you some examples of how you can include HIIT in your exercise routine, depending on whether or not you are a beginner, intermediate or advanced level interval trainer. I'll be using a treadmill for my examples, but you can use this method with just about any exercise equipment you have. From biking to rowing to simply using the stairs, this is possible anywhere you are. There's no need for any fancy new gadget, or expensive machines.

Beginners: A good beginner's interval training program is one using walking and jogging as the exercise. You can begin with a 1 minute walk, followed by a 1 minute jog. You simply repeat this as many time as possible without straining yourself. It's important that your body get used to this type of activity, especially if you haven't been exercising regularly until now.

As you progress, you can eventually get yourself up to a 30/30 routine. This means you walk for 30 seconds and then jog for 30 seconds. If you would like to make it a little harder, increase the incline level on your treadmill. Keep yourself at this level 2 to 4 times a week until you find it less of a challenge and are ready to move ahead to the intermediate level.

Intermediate: This level is for those who have been exercising for approximately 6 months, or are already healthy and fit. Instead of the walk-jog routing used in the beginner level, you would choose a jog-run program.

Begin by warming up with stretches followed by a 5 minute jog on the treadmill. Then run for one minute, and back to jogging for 1 minute etc. Repeat this as many times as you can. You want to be running at a good, steady pace. Once you're ready for more intensity you may want to try 30 seconds of jogging followed by 30 seconds of running. This level of training can be practiced 3 to 5 times a week, for 10 - 20 minutes each time.

Up until now, you have simply been conditioning yourself in preparation for your HIIT program or routine. This is where it starts to get challenging, but the results will be much different than what you have seen to date.

Advanced Interval Training Program (HIIT): There are many variations of the following recommendation, but I'll only explain this one for now. Now remember, in order to achieve the best possible results, this HAS to be intense. When you're done with this routine you should be very tired. Beginners who claim they were able to do this for a full 20 minutes on their first attempt simply aren't using enough intensity.

Once you're ready for HIIT, start with your warm-up stretches and a 5 minute jog or run. Next it's time for a complete sprint; running like you've never ran before, and this for as long as you can. Change back down to a jog for 1 minute and sprint again for as long as possible. Keep repeating this as many times as you can.

If you made it past 5 minutes following your warm-up on your first few tries, CONGRATULATIONS! For most people it will take quite some time to actually be able to make it to 20 minutes of doing this. Once you do reach this level however, you can try a 30 second jog followed by the sprint in order to increase the intensity of your HIIT session. Want even more of a challenge? Add an incline on your treadmill to your routine.

Some other variations would be to perform the all out sprint and then back to a jog again until you are ready to perform another sprint. Although not as intense, it's a good way to get used to the program.

Perform this training 3 to 5 times a week, for 5 to 20 minutes depending on your ability.

And there you have it. One of the best ways to retain muscle while losing fat, and you can do it just about anywhere. Grab a bike, find a track, use a stair-master...just about anything is going to work. Are you up for the challenge?

Innovative Sports Sandal - FitFlops

What do women want? They want something they can do two things at once. They want something where they can save time. They want something like the Fit Flop Sandals that works there legs out while they walk. It was difficult to find anyone who could make the idea into a reality. After a lot of searching, they found LSBU and the center for human performance. With there passion and intellect, they devised a way to train the bottom of the foot to do all the work that it would do if you were walking barefoot.

The main premise of the Fit Flop Sandal is to induce a bit of instability so when you are walking, you hit the ground as normally as possible. It then moves you so you progress through this phase quite quickly and then you move into a softer area and as you move over this softer area, Fit Flop Sandals produce instability so it activates your muscles to hold your posture so as you take more and more steps, the body is being stimulated more and more and working more. And then when it comes off this soft area, it tapers up back again to a firm area. So that you can then progress. So you feel like it's a reward. It's done its soft work, you've done your hard work. Now you've hit a nice area you can push off and move to your next step.

The Fit Flop Sandals is a very appealing product to many for the fact that is very appealing good looking and stylish. You can wear them with jeans, shorts, a skirt, sports cloths, making them much more appealing to look at versus other fitness sandals in the market. There's lots of sandals out there that are high-tech that promise to do a lot from a bio-mechanical standpoint. But a lot of them are out of the budget of your average person. But the Fit Flop sandals are priced at a point that makes them very accessible to a wide audience.

Creating longer, leaner more toned legs one step at a time. The Fit Flops' will take your everyday walk to a whole new level.

Should You Train Your Abs Before Or After Your Workout?

Here's some thoughts on the timing of your abdominal training.

1 - Do them first as most people skip abs and calves. Some trainers will prescribe the ab work and calf work first as they are commonly neglected body parts.

2 - There's no problem with working abs first as long as you still have enough core strength to safely finish your workout.

3 - "Work the weakest body part first", as long as it doesn't adversely effect other body parts you might work that day. If your abs are lacking, then you'd certainly want to focus on them and work them first while your energy and focus is highest.

4 - Depending on your goals, you can work them first or last. If your focus is abs then train them first. Weaknesses should be trained early on in the session when you are fresh.

5 - Timing doesn't matter. Consistency is the key. Doing them is more important then when you do them.

5- Do them last after your larger muscle groups as sacrificing core strength at the beginning of the workout can compromise safety and strength.

So what is correct?

A study done in the January 2007 issue of Muscle and Fitness found that a group who performed a 6 rep max squat set did significantly less weight if they trained abs before doing the squats.

It was obvious that if you train your abs first, you won't have the core strength necessary to do certain leg exercises that require a fair amount of core strength.

If your abs and core are fatigued from previous exercises, it can cause weakness on subsequent exercises and increase the risk of lower back injury.

If you are short on time, you can superset them with other smaller muscle groups like forearms and calves. But never sacrifice core strength and safety simply to get your ab training out of the way early even if it's your weakest body part.

Those concerned with their abs or if your abs are a weakness, you can do additional work on non-weight training days (some people do them after cardio to keep them separate from weight training sessions).

Something to ponder:

Why would you fatigue your triceps before doing chest work?

You wouldn't.

Why would you fatigue your abs before doing any muscles that require your core as a primary stabilize?

You shouldn't.

While I agree the level of core work depends on the abilities of the individual there's still NO physiological reason yet that clearly describes a situation in which case doing core work BEFORE your workout is beneficial other than a time saver, your fresh or "do it first so you don't forget it".

According to David Grisaffi who is a Sports Conditioning Coach and holds multiple certifications including three from the prestigious CHEK Institute. Plus he is also the author of the popular selling e book, "Firm and Flatten Your Abs,"

On Page 32 of Firm and Flatten Your Abs David says:

"On the days when you are doing weight training exercises for your other body parts (legs, arms, back, chest, shoulders), always do your abs and core routine after the rest of your weight training so that you're not training the rest of your body with a fatigued core and stabilizers."

The bottom line is: Ab training and any core work comes AFTER larger muscle groups.

Durex Introduces Innovative Lubricants For Heightened Pleasure

In the past, lubricants used in condoms were just the plain type. Adults were used to it then but through the years, they were seeking more pleasure with their partners. Fortunately, one of the world's leading condom manufacturers was quick to respond to this need and that's when the innovative Durex lubes came about.

The latest lubricants of Durex called Play Lubes are available in different variants. Whatever is your mood, there's one that will surely suit you.

Feel - This is a water based lubricant but different from the regular one you're used to. It is because this type is not sticky or greasy. It feels light to the skin and ensures smoothness all the way.

Heat - As its name suggests, this Play lube guarantees you and your partner experience the warmth you've always desired. By using this variant, you can remain hot and desirable to your partner.

Tingle - Men and women love to feel some tingling sensation when their sexual desires are aroused. Using the Play Tingle lube will help you achieve this on whatever part of the body. With its silky feel, refreshing taste and fresh scent, you can become as desirable as you can be to your partner.

Pina Colada - Do you think this name is just for tropical cocktail drinks? Think again because Durex has come up with its own version of Pina Colada although in a lubricant form this time. But just the same, applying this lube is smooth and leaves a sweet and fruity scent like you've never experienced before.

What also makes this lubricant an advantage is the fact that it's water soluble. This means you can use it with your Durex condom and vibrators.

Very Cherry - Those seeking a flavorful experience should try this variant. It's similar to the Pina Colada being smooth to apply with a sweet and fruity flavor to boot. But don't worry as it's free from sugar and water soluble so you are free to use it along with a condom and even the vibrator.

Aloe Vera - For those with sensitive skin, using this variant is ideal. It ensures a silky but not sticky sensation but at the same time nourishes the skin because of its aloe vera ingredient. Being water based, it can also be easily washed off without leaving any stains.

Massage - This is in a gel form but can also serve as a lubricant at the same time. It also contains aloe vera to make sure that your skin is well nourished while you're enjoying the company of your partner.

Massage Melts - This is the frozen form of the Durex Play Massage 2 in 1 gel. Using this on the body will result in a tingling sensation. It's safe to use with a condom as it can act as a lubricant as well.

Mousse - A familiar name associated with sweetness if food is what you have in mind. Now Durex has its own version that comes in a cream form. But this 2 in 1 mousse is light and non greasy users will easily feel comfortable with it.

Getting the Most Out of an Elliptical Machine

Do you want to get fit? Do you want to get yourself into a cardiovascular program that will shed pounds off your belly and keep your heart working in tip top shape? Most people would think that the answer to this is jumping on the treadmill or cycling endlessly. However such forms of exercise cause more pain than gain. If you are one of those who knows this very well then you might want to try using an elliptical machine.

In the 80s, the fitness world welcomed the arrival of cross-country sky machines. They were seen as better alternatives to the old-fashioned treadmills and stationary bikes because they allow health buffs to workout more with less time. The cross-country machines were indeed great in this light but a lot people find cross-country ski movements to be rather unnatural and thus more taxing to do. Because of this, innovative fitness machine developers modified the design to adapt to what people usually do with their body - walking, stepping, cycling, or skiing, but now with an elliptical motion, which produces less or no impact. This allows people to workout more and burn more calories without getting tired or burnt out easily.

How effective is an elliptical machine in burning calories?

There are hundreds of elliptical machines in the market and their effectiveness to burn calories varies greatly. Some manufacturers say that within an hour you can burn over 700 calories or more. While this may be true, the optimization of calorie-burning depends upon the user - how much time or how much effort is exerted working out is a primary factor on the elliptical machine's effectiveness. It is safe to say that the rates would be similar to those of cross-country ski machines.

Benefits and Drawbacks with Elliptical Machines

An elliptical machine allows exercises to work out their bodies in shorter periods with less or no strain. Elliptical machines can be used for all fitness levels, from beginner to athletic, and all working out ages. The elderly could well benefit from its use because it produces less stress on the joints. It can be a great alternative to cycling and running machines to prevent boredom from exercise. At home, it can be used while watching the TV or listening to the radio as it generally produces less noise compared to running on treadmills.

The problems with elliptical machines also lie on its benefits. Because it is easy to use, some people tend to overdo their workout. People forget the importance of warming up, stretching, and cooling down. Some exercisers also tend to work their heart rates up to the limits. The lack of impact may also result into the burning of fewer calories when not enough effort is exerted. The variety of models can be confusing to a lot of consumers as compared to buying more basic machines like the treadmill, where the only concern is for it to allow one to run continually.

When buying elliptical machines it is important to first check your budget and then see all models and brands that would match your funds. You should then check the features of each model and see what you think would best serve your purposes. It is important to try working out on the machine as you would normally work out - with proper shoes and clothes on. Most importantly, you should check with your doctor to see if the machine and the exercise it allows you to do would be appropriate for your health level.

Working out can be fun with an elliptical machine! Try and see for yourself.

Type 2 Diabetes and Exercise

It's a known fact that everyone should take part in some sort of exercise on a regular basis. However, health experts in the US say that only 30% of the people are getting their daily recommended amount of 30 minutes of exercise. In fact approximately 25% aren't active at all. This could be one of the key reasons why there is such a dramatic increase in the number of cases of Type 2 diabetes in recent years.

There's good news. It's never too late to get started, and regular exercise is one of the best (and easiest) ways to start controlling your diabetes. For people with Type 2 diabetes in particular, the American Diabetes Association states exercise can improve insulin sensitivity, lower the risk of heart disease, and promote weight loss.

Some symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes include an increase in thirst, appetite, and need to urinate, fatigue, vision problems and tingling in the hands and feet. If you're experiencing one or more of these symptoms, see your health care provider as soon as possible.

Getting Started

The first step when it comes to any exercise plan is consulting your health care provider. If you have cardiac or other risk factors, your physician might want you to undergo certain tests to make sure you choose the safest level of exercise possible.

If you are already quite active in sports or regularly work out, you can still benefit from a visit with your physician. He or she may want to see how your present exercise routine is affecting your diabetes. If you are a person with diabetes taking insulin, it's also important to take any necessary steps to prevent hypoglycemia during your workout.

Start Slow

For people with Type 2 diabetes, there's no need for your exercise routine to be anything excessive. It can be as simple as a nightly walk around your neighborhood. For those who haven't been very active before now, it's very important to start slowly and work your way up. Walk the dog, or get out in the yard and rake the leaves. Try to take the stairs instead of the elevator. Park your car farther than you normally do and walk. Even if it only seems like a little bit, you really are helping yourself a lot.

With as little as 15 to 30 minutes of daily, heart-pumping exercise you can make a big difference in not only your blood glucose control, but also your risk of developing complications related to your diabetes. If you don't know where to start we have a solution. The easiest and least expensive ways of getting things moving is grab a comfortable pair of shoes, a friend or two and start walking. The biggest decision you'll have to make is which direction to take.

Remember these important facts before heading out for any type of exercise if you have diabetes:

- Wear your medical identification (Medic-Alert) bracelet or necklace at all times, in case of an emergency.

- Bring a bottle of water to make sure you stay hydrated.

- Pay attention to your body's signs. Head home or take a break if you start feeling weak, dizzy or start experiencing other signs of hypoglycemia. Carry with you some sort of glucose source which you can take orally, such as 4oz of orange or apple juice, or perhaps 4 crackers.

Following these guidelines, as well as taking the necessary precautions, can lead you down the road to better health, and perhaps even a Type-2 diabetes-free future.

Balancing Muscle and Cardio Fitness For Total Gains

There is much to say about balance. When everything is balanced, there is leverage, things are even. With such a state of equilibrium, you can expect a better footing which most likely results to stability and optimal benefits. Balance is advisably applied to health and fitness and life in general. Take the case of an exercise regimen. Many people are under the notion that a certain or specific kind of exercise would be most suited for them. Aerobic exercise had been a popular exercise scheme in the past. People were under the notion that aerobic physical activity alone will deliver the best fitness results.

But as more advancements in the health and fitness arena took place, innovative fitness schemes emerged, one of which is combining exercises. As certain exercises are combined, the key to making them efficient is through balance. When aiming on fitness, it is not enough that you lose weight. You have to ensure that your muscles are toned as well. You ought to develop muscle mass not only to have an appealing physique, but more so, to boost your metabolism. And boosted metabolism is the most crucial factor in weight loss. Then again, when fitness is considered, health should also be taken into account.

In muscle building, you grow muscle mass, you look better. But more than looking better, you should be healthy, too. You have to make sure that your body processes such as blood circulation and respiration are functioning at their best. This is termed as cardiovascular health, or cardio fitness. Building muscle mass is aimed on gaining fit and well-conditioned muscles. You have to consider that your heart is a muscle as well. In the same as the other muscles in your body, you have to keep your heart working well by working it out. Cardio exercises are effective in this regard.

So other than your body building program, you ought to take time for aerobic exercise. You can do so by engaging in certain cardio fitness workouts such as jogging or brisk walking. Gym exercises can also fare well in this endeavor especially with the availability of commercial gym equipments. Other than giving you leisure and relaxation, playing your favorite sport will also benefit your cardiovascular health and fitness. Cardio fitness workouts primarily effect the heart and lungs. When performing such workouts your heart rate increases, and circulation in your system improves. Oxygen flow throughout your body is also enhanced. Bodybuilders should consider incorporating cardio fitness activities in their bodybuilding plan.

In a bodybuilding plan, an athlete is usually advised to eat a diet rich in proteins. When having a protein-rich diet, chances are that fat will develop in the body. Muscle building exercises are designed to burn these fats, but what about cholesterol? Cholesterol in itself presents too many health detriments, and they have to be done away with. Cardio fitness workouts will be effective in this aspect. But remember the rule of balance in the program. Too much aerobic activity can reverse the effect of your bodybuilding workout- it can reduce muscle mass. So it is should be the proportionate amount of bodybuilding and cardio workouts to gain total health and fitness.

In your weight training program, you can incorporate activities such as jumping rope, fitness walking or jogging, riding a bike and even playing basketball with your friends. Again, do your balancing with working hard and leisure even as you strive towards being healthy and looking good.

5 Things to Pack When Camping For a Fitness Enthusiast!

Camping is something that we all do in the summertime. It's fun to be out in the wild with other people that enjoy the same thing. There's nothing like spending time beside a campfire, roasting marsh mellows and catching fish. It's also one of the most difficult times for homeostasis for fitness enthusiasts.

Five things you need to remember to bring.

1- Protein bars. Nothing prevents atrophy like protein does. When your body fails to meet its demand for protein - amino acids are the first thing to go! You can prevent this by supplying your body with a few protein bars before the most demanding activities. And guess what? They don't take up very much room at all. And, on top of that, you can bring them with you by putting them in your pockets. Doesn't take time to cook, they're cheap, and you can bring plenty of them.

2- Lean meats. Protein bars are fine when you're out walking and getting ready to do something and need the energy, but if you're setting beside the campfire and getting ready to sleep, then you need a complete balanced meal. Lean meats like turkey, cans of tuna (which would of course require a can opener) and maybe some chicken would be an excellent way to way before you go to sleep.

3- Water. This is often something that is actually neglected. People far too often think that water is supplied through the river and is not needed to take with you; this is a very wrong assumption. Water is purified when you buy it from the store; furthermore, the water from the woods could easily be contaminated if you don't know what to look for. I suggest bringing at least 3-5 bottles per person for each day you're in the woods. After all, you burn significant more energy and water in the forest.

4- Olive oil. Easy to carry, lots of healthy fat for energy. And it is very easy to add into your water bottle. There's nothing wrong with drinking it all while you're taking a hike! Olive oil can also elevate HDL, which is what testosterone is made from, keeping your anabolic.

5- Rice crispy treats. Did I just say rice crispy treats? Yep! Sure, they have some sugar in them, but you're burning so much fuel in the wild that it's almost required to eat dirty. Rice crispy treats are tasty and they have loads of complex carbs. Besides, they're cheap, affordable, and can easily be packed!

Body Fat Percentage is The Right Way to Measure Fitness

Because your body is about 50-55% water, you can temporarily stage-manage your weight with diet pills and fad diets but, you cannot manipulate your body fat percentage. Body fat percentage is a more meaningful metric for gauging physical fitness than what you can get out of height and weight tables.

The U.S. Army established a maximum allowable body fat percentage standard that applies to everybody from recruit to four-star general. Failure to meet the body fat percentage standard means no promotions and no career training. Repeated failure to meet the standard will result in an early exit from the Army. That's a harsh result.

At least with the Army people know what to expect as a consequence of ignoring their own physical fitness. The world we all live in may not be as honest as the Army in defining those consequences but, the results may be as unkind.

Excessive body fat connotes a lack of personal discipline and can lead to low self-esteem. It detracts from appearance and suggests a poor state of health, physical fitness or stamina. That is what researchers found from measuring the responses of people to photos of different body types.

The maximum allowable body fat percentages for everybody in the U.S. Army are shown below. Chances are you are not in the military and never intend to be but, can you suggest a more thoroughly researched or carefully crafted standard?

Maximum allowable body fat percentages are categorized by age and gender. For males this is the breakdown:

Age 17 – 20: Max Body Fat is 20%
Age 21 – 27: Max Body Fat is 22%
Age 28 – 39:. Max Body Fat is 24%
Age 40 and over: Max Body Fat is 26%

And for females:

Age 17 – 20: Max Body Fat is 28%
Age 21 – 27: Max Body Fat is 30%
Age 28 – 39:. Max Body Fat is 32%
Age 40 and over: Max Body Fat is 34%

It's fair to say that knowing your body fat percentage is a necessary first step to getting fit and trim. Because your body is about 55-60% water, you can stage-manage your weight with diet pills and fad diets but, you cannot manipulate body fat percentage.

Consider making your physical fitness goal to get your body fat percentage in line with the U.S. Army standard for the maximum allowable body fat percentage for your age and gender. Once you get there you will have accomplished something meaningful and made physical fitness a positive habit. You will be able to take your body-building and fitness ambitions anywhere you want to go.

Fortunately determining your body fat percentage is easy. If you cannot or do not want to get it done at a gym or anywhere else other than privately, you can get a body fat caliper at a sporting goods store or at Amazon.com. There is an under $15 model and even one with a digital readout for around $30. The instructions that come with the body fat caliper are helpful enough for you to take readings as accurate as you would get at the gym or the doctor's office.

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a number calculated from a person’s weight and height. BMI is used for creating statistics from large groups of people and in that role is considered a reliable indicator of body fat percentage for an entire population. You’re a population of one. Get the body fat calipers.

How To Get Rid Of Flabby Arms B

Hats off to a very brave woman who stepped up and finally wanted to get rid of the flabby arms and the sooner the better. Luckily for her, this problem is quite common and the solution is quite simple and two-fold. Working to get rid of flabby arms comes with overall fitness but there's some specific exercises you can do in addition to reducing body fat that will bring those arms into super shape once again.

On just another normal day, I received an email with a cry for help.

"I would like to know how to build up the muscle around the humerous bones of the upper arms. I would like to know how to build up the muscle around the humerous bones of the upper arms. I want to get rid of flabby upper arms!"

For starters...

The muscle that is most problematic for flabby arms is called: The Tricep

Most women think of these things when it comes to that area:

* flabby arms * exercise for flabby arms * tone flabby arms * how to get rid of flabby arms * flabby arm help * flabby upper arms * etc

There are really two key concepts to that particular predicament. Keep in mind that this is such a common question so you are certainly not alone in this. But just keep reading because the answer is pretty simple and may surprise you!

First, get the idea out of your head that there's any such thing as 'spot reduction.' Meaning, if you do certain exercises for that area, the fat will magically disappear just from there and your arms will suddenly be taunt and tone again. Let me give you a real quick lesson on fat. Don't worry this is going to be easy.

Your body stores fat. It stores it in general areas that are common to you as a female. Most men store the most fat in their stomachs. Women tend to store it in their thighs, hips and buttocks. But with anything, you can and will store fat wherever. So the first thing you want to do is...

Reduce the body fat period!

Once you start to reduce fat, you'll see it disappear. Don't bother with creams and rubs and all the other gimmicks out there. You cannot spot reduce. Your body stores fat and the only way to reduce fat in any particular area that is bothering you is to reduce fat period from your body as a whole.

For all these reasons,...

Your first mission, should you choose to accept it, is to reduce the body fat.

Second, in order for that area of your arm to become tone, you'll want to build muscle in the back of the arm. That is called the Tricep and there's several good exercise you can do to build up that area.

But first, let me give you a list of some of the best exercises for flabby arms that will focus on the tricep and help you develop the area and make it stronger. This isn't all inclusive but it's some of the more common and better exercises you can do for the back of the arms.

* Weighted dips * Close grip bench press * Close grip push ups * Lying barbell French press * Overhead cable extensions * Cable press downs * Reverse cable press downs

Frankly...

Many people are caught up in the idea that in order for them to get rid of a problematic area they need to just work it out and do some exercises to target that area.

But that's only half of the solution as you've read.

By working out the area AND reducing body fat, you will progress at twice the speed and make twice the visual differences.

Let's suppose you only worked out the back of the arms. The muscle would be stronger and firmer no doubts, but it might not show IF your level of body fat is such that the muscle is still covered up.

As you see, by doing both, you will tone up (build) the tricep and make it more visible when the layer of fat that covers it up is reduced.

Men and women who want to reduce the 'flabby' anything simply have to realize that it's a combination of body fat in that area, maybe loose skin and a muscle that generally needs to be developed in order to be taunt.

But I'm getting way ahead of myself!

This is a two fold mission.

1- Reduce body fat

2- Do specific exercises to build muscle in the back of the arm so that once the fat is gone, you'll have a tricep and it will appear tight and tone

In a nutshell what this will do for you is make the back of your arms less flabby as the fat is lost from your body and the new muscle will bring added tone and tightness to the back of your arm.

Fitness Programs

Fitness is a state of the human body that allows it to function up to its full potential. It is the ability to do regular jobs without any strain, while being alert and energetic enough to endure any stressful activities. It is basically a condition wherein, all the major parts of the body, heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, bones and muscles are in proper working condition. There are four aspects related to physical fitness: cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength, and muscular endurance and flexibility. Fitness programs are the path to having a healthy body. They are the perfect way to incorporate exercise into the daily routine. Fitness programs, when followed religiously, are a remarkable way to counter several diseases, even in old age. Fitness programs need a lot of commitment and hard work.

There are several stages in incorporating a fitness program into your daily routine. The first thing is to check your present health condition to determine what kind of a program would suit you. This requires a basic health check up of blood pressure, diabetes-check, and a full work over for any suspected diseases, and past injuries. Also, consider your family history. Are you prone to heart attacks, strokes, arthritis, and other ailments? A major aspect in physical fitness is the body’s composition, which indicates the makeup of the body in terms of the ratio of lean mass to fat mass. Lean mass is comprised of muscle, bone, vital tissue and organs. Fat is fat.

Fitness programs take all these physical conditions of the person into account. The ideal exercise regime for a person will suit his/her body type. This is also contingent upon one’s objective be it weight loss, physical strength, or others. Fitness programs are composed of several kinds of activities such as: aerobics, aquatic exercises, golf, walking, skipping, jogging, swimming, bicycling, running, skiing, or playing sports like tennis and squash.

Fitness program should be chosen to suit your fitness level. They should be enjoyable, with realistic goals, and should fit well with your lifestyle. Some people may not see immediate results. Depending on the program as well as their body type results may vary. However, patience is very important. Choosing more than one type of exercise would also make it interesting. You can opt for an instructor for special kinds of fitness programs or for group fitness programs. People with disabilities need to follow fitness programs consistently.

There are many professional fitness centers that have sophisticated equipment to suit all kinds of people and their fitness needs. These centers have professionals and medical specialists who would be able to offer advice about the best kind of fitness program to take up. They provide customized workout routines, nutrition plans, personal trainers, and expert guidance to make the results last.
